The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, as it is more commonly known, is a testing system designed to accurately assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work in an English speaking country. IELTS is often required for entry into university, in countries such as Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and the USA, and it is also recognised by professional bodies, for employment, immigration authorities and other government agencies.
What is the format of the IELTS test?
There are two types of IELTS tests – Academic, or General. Here at Direct English we focus mainly on the Academic test as this is the one required for educational purposes. The test is broken down into four parts – Listening (30 minutes), Speaking (15 minutes),writing (60 minutes) and reading (60 minutes), and it’s taken over a two-day period.
The scoring works on a band system from 1 to 9, with 9 being the highest possible score. Half scores are also awarded and you are tested on all four parts of the test, and the grade for each added together to get the final score. Usually, for educational purposes you will be asked for a minimum grade of 6. At times you can be asked for a minimum score in each of the four sections.
You can use the IELTS Band Score Calculator on this site to convert your reading and listening raw scores.
During the IELTS programme you will be taught all you need to know to be able to do well in the test. We have designed the course to encompass all elements of the IELTS test – Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking – and we will practice the format of the test over and over by using real test papers. We will also cover all aspects of grammar that you may need to do your very best on test day.
The IELTS exam is a very content-specific exam, so a good level of English does not ensure that a student would do well in this test. In order to succeed in this test, it is imperative that students familiarise themselves with the format of the test, and practise a lot until they are confident with it.
At Direct English, our teachers work with the students to ensure they understand what is required of them for the test, and teach the classes with the students’ success in mind at all times.
Anyone, provided they are over the age of 18, can join this programme. However, it is important to note that although this exam does not have an academic entry requirement; a good knowledge of English is required to take this course.
It is imperative (for visa purposes) that students take the official IELTS exam before the end of the course at Direct English.
